BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- Firefighters worked for about an hour to bring a large structure fire under control in the Southside area.

The fire appears to have destroyed a building located at 20th Street South and 9th Avenue South. Parts of the building have reportedly collapsed.

FOX6 News Reporter Christy Hutchings is on scene and says that police tell her the structure is an abandoned house but fire officials haven't confirmed this detail. Mayor William Bells told Hutchings that the structure was actually on the city's list to be reviewed for possible condemnation.

An official with UAB says that the fire, though close to the university, is not on UAB property.

Firefighters expect to be on scene for several more hours, if not overnight to monitor the scene. Some have even set up on the roofs of adjacent buildings to make sure the fire doesn't jump to other structures.

Officials say that one person was hurt and taken to the hospital but their condition is unknown. Firefighters have not yet had a chance to search the burned structure to determine if anyone was inside.
